NOBU MATSUHISA

Born March 10th, 1949 as the third son to a lumber merchant
in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. He started his study to become a sushi chef at Matsuei-zushi in Shinjuku, Tokyo. From there, he experienced opening restaurants in Peru, Argentina, and Alaska to finally open his own restaurant, Matsuhisa in 1987 in Beverly Hills, CA. The rumor of Matsuhisa quickly spread and the restaurant became a popular eatery for the Hollywood crowd. In 1994, Nobu answers to the offer by the renowned actor and regular diner, Robert DeNiro to open the first of the NOBUs, (NOBU New York City) in the Tribeca district. In 2000, he tags up with the fashion designer, Georgio Armani, to open NOBU Milan. With 21 locations currently in operation, he continues to receive offers to open in other areas around the world.
Nobu Matsuhisa without a doubt has been marked as one of the most talked about chefs of today, and his success has greatly influenced the spread of Japanese cuisine around the world.
With his knowledge of techniques and ingredients of Japanese cuisine as his back bone, Nobu cleverly combines them with the essences he absorbed in his experiences in South America and the U.S. to continually dazzle all who eat it, Nobu has been recognized with awards such as the “Best Ten Chef’s in the US”, consecutively ranked No.1 in the category of “Taste” in the Zagat Food Survey and a Michellen star to NOBU London only to name a few. He has been presented with Time Magazine’s “Asian Heroes Award 2005” in recognition for his influence in bringing Asia closer to the rest of the world. He has also been active outside the food business and has made appearances in movies and commercials.
In recent years he has increased his focus on charity by participating in charity events and dinners. He is one of the founders of the “Taste of Dream” charity event started in 2005, bringing together celebrity chefs in Japan to raise funds for various causes.
